One serum is easy. Two or three is where people start second-guessing. Which goes first? Do you wait? Can they even be used together?
Good news: layering is simpler than it looks. A few rules cover almost everything.
The golden rule: thinnest to thickest
Apply your products from the lightest, most watery texture to the heaviest. Thin layers absorb quickly. Thicker ones help seal everything underneath. Flip the order and your heavier products block the lighter ones from doing their job.
The basic routine order
- Cleanser
- Toner (optional)
- Serum or serums
- Moisturizer
- SPF (morning only)
Serums always go after cleansing and before moisturizer. That’s where they do their best work.
Give each layer a moment
Wait 30 to 60 seconds between serums. You don’t need a timer, just let each one absorb before the next goes on. Layering too quickly can make products pill or slide around.
Split your concerns between morning and night
You don’t have to use everything at once. A cleaner approach:
- Morning: focus on how your skin looks and feels today. Shine control or hydration, followed by moisturizer and SPF.
- Night: focus on longer-term concerns like dark spots and uneven tone, when your skin isn’t dealing with sun and makeup.
Combination skin? Target by zone
Serums don’t have to go everywhere. If your T-zone gets oily but your cheeks feel dry, apply a mattifying serum to your forehead, nose, and chin, and a hydrating serum to your cheeks. Your face isn’t one skin type, so your routine doesn’t have to be either.
Keep it to two or three
More serums doesn’t mean better results. Past three, you’re more likely to irritate your skin than improve it. Pick the concerns that matter most and focus there.
Introducing something new
Add one new product at a time and give it about two weeks before adding another. If your skin reacts, you’ll know exactly what caused it. Patch test first if your skin is sensitive.
